CHEMICAL
PROPERTIES
The oxide is very hygroscopic, readily absorbing moisture and
carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It is insoluble in water but
dissolves in mineral acids to form salts of the La3+ cation, the
only stable valence. Among La(III) salts, the carbonate, hydroxide
and oxalate are insoluble in water whereas the chloride and nitrate
are soluble; the acetate is sparingly soluble. Several lanthanum-rich
mixed-lanthanide salts are standard products. Please request further
information.
