Chemical
Properties
The
hygroscopic oxide is insoluble in water but will
dissolve in mineral acids to form salts of the Nd+3
cation that are usually pink-violet in color. Among
Nd(III) salts, the carbonate, hydroxide and oxalate
are insoluble in water whereas the chloride and
nitrate are soluble; the acetate is sparingly soluble.
The
color of this oxide is sensitive to slight variations
in particle size, cerium and praseodymium contents.
