Chemical
Properties
The oxide is hygroscopic and will absorb moisture
and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It is insoluble
in water but soluble in mineral acids to form solutions
of Sm3+ salts. Sm(III) compounds resemble other
Ln(III) compounds in their propertiesthe carbonate,
hydroxide and oxalate are insoluble in water whereas
the chloride and nitrate are soluble. Under extreme
reducing conditions Sm(II) compounds can be prepared,
Sm(III/Sm(II) = -1.55 V.
